Who else but Fox could get away with just saying no to the President?

Have you ever said no to someone in management before?

Ever had one of those *gulp* type of moments where the thought “was that a CLM (career-limiting move)?” runs screaming through your head the moment the words leave your mouth?

Amusement of the Week

This week I was watching some reruns of Entourage on MuchMore (previously known as MuchMoreMusic, MuchMusic’s alternate channel) when I noticed something strange. If you’ve ever watched Entourage, you know that there’s a lot of coarse language and definitely mature, adult situations. Because of this the TV network played one of those “viewer discretion is advised” warnings when they came back from each commercial break. Only this warning was different. That’s why it caught my eye, or ear, rather. Listen to this:

This program contains extremeley coarse language, mature themes and nudity, and is not suitable for younger audiences. Even some adults may be offended.

What caught my ear was the last statement, “Even some adults may be offended.” The rest of the warning wasn’t good enough? Why do we have to say it’s only unsuitable for “younger audiences”? Can’t you simply say “…and is not suitable for all audiences”? That would cover everyone, wouldn’t it?

Aside from my amusement at this warning as a writer, I am actually a bit annoyed with all of these warnings in general. Every show on tv now has a warning, and up until this new MuchMore warning my favourite was the one seen on Fox’s Bones, which talked about how the show contains “forensic content”, so “viewer discretion is advised”.

Found this posting for a writer on Craigslist:

I need someone to help edit my resume to fit under a Technical Writer for a fashion company, as well as letters of reference from stating I was a technical writer and did these tasks.

I have most of the information for you, I just need someone to write a couple pages and edit my resume. I will need someone to research this job title function in the fashion industry.

$150 flat

What’s hilarious about this is that in the first paragraph he says he needs someone to help edit his resume & reference letters. Okay, as a writer I can understand wanting to get another pair of eyes on something I’ve written. Sure. But then, he says that he “(has) most of the information…(and) just needs someone to write a couple of pages…” Uhm, but didn’t you say you just needed an edit?

My quesiton at this point is a simple one: Do you just need an edit or do you need someone to write it all up for you?

If it’s the latter, then just say so. Actually, you could probably go to a resume writing service and get the work done for the same amount of money. So it’s not like he’s really saving any money.

This is why I love reading the writing job posts on Craigslist. Some of them are just so funny. But this one has a bad odour to it, in my opinion. What do you think?
