Hey there!

I’m Julia Borgini – writer, Geek, Canadian, human

A child of the 1980s, I grew up before we could carry phones in our pockets and when you had to walk to the TV to change the channel.

But that didn’t stop my Geek genes from expressing themselves. They popped up when I was just a little kid. Pretty soon, I was coding BASIC programs to draw designs on the screen and having fun guiding Pac-Man around his maze on my Atari 2600. (Which I still have, BTW. It occupies a special spot in my closet.)

The early academic years …

But I sublimated my geekiness and went to university for French & Italian literature. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed these studies, but I really just did that to please my parents. They thought I’d become a French teacher (which would be cool, but I knew that wasn’t for me).

The Geek Force was just too strong

It was 1998 before I decided to let my Geek Force take hold of my life. That’s when I went back to school for my Technical Communications certificate. I was so excited about it!

Getting to learn how people learn & assimilate information and then working for technology companies? Awesome.

I could not WAIT to start my first tech writing job and put all that knowledge and enthusiasm to work.

Then, the dot-com bust.

That was hard for everyone. Ouch.

Luckily, I wasn’t out of work for too long, but long enough to appreciate not working. To keep my skills sharp, I kept studying and reading so that when I did go back, I’d be the best damned technical writer I could be. And I was.

Pretty soon, more than a decade had passed and I moved from tech writer to senior tech writer to tech writing manager. I worked for many different tech companies in a variety of industries. From insurance companies to Internet security companies. Educational video game producers to one of Canada’s Big Five banks (twice!)

After 14+ years, I wanted more

Sure, it was fun working for these amazing tech companies, helping them grow and evolve, but I wanted to flex my creative muscles a bit more. I wanted to write different things other than procedures and release notes.

Let’s face it. Not many people were reading the content I was producing. (Be honest, when was the last time YOU read an instruction manual? Exactly.)

I wanted to reach a wider audience, in different ways, with different content.

So I pivoted to copywriting.

I found AWAI and learned about B2B copywriting. Which lead me to Steve Slaunwhite and Ed Gandia. They taught me how to craft persuasive B2B copy for the tech industry.

Until I discovered Copyblogger.

Brian Clark and the rest of the team introduced me to content marketing and I was hooked. I started reading Ann Handley and Joe Pulizzi. Lee Odden and Jay Baer.

Writing valuable and helpful content is exactly what I’d been doing as a technical writer, but through content marketing, I could reach an even wider audience. An audience that would help my clients grow and expand their companies, while building their reputation as one that cares about their customers first, profit second.

Content marketing is the perfect blend of tech and copywriting. I believe it’s the best way to translate tech genius to audiences and help tech users be successful every day.

Cut to Today

I’m a proud Geek who’s studied the crafts of copywriting and technical writing with some of the best people & organizations out there. I know how to blend the two disciplines in a way that makes the technical and complex seem easy; yet still speaks directly to people’s emotional core and drives them to action.

That’s technical copywriting and I’m a technical copywriter.

A Geek that writes. I’m a technical copywriter for B2B tech & SaaS companies around the world. I think of myself as a professional audience advocate who translates tech genius for audiences & readers.

While I don’t spend much of my time coding or learning the ins & outs of the latest programming language, I keep up with the latest trends in technology. I’m excited to see what machine learning does for us and how we can harness it for good (and not evil). I just discovered Gatsby and Statamic and I’m curious to see if I can learn how to use either to build my next website (or business). (Update: I still haven’t figured them out, so my site remains as-is…)

The point is, I speak Geek. I love technology and how it can help us. I’m also a lifelong storyteller and professional writer. That makes me uniquely qualified to create content for your B2B technology company that fosters engagement, increases sales, and educates your customers. Sounds like a lot of hot air, but it’s true.
